Williams System 30 Wheels and ROL Race SL

Hello, I am requesting that anyone riding Williams 30 or ROL Race wheels to please share your opinions.

My goal is to upgrade the wheels on my new S1 with a wheelset from an independent. While I can find online reviews about these wheels elsewhere, I am interested in Cervelo owner experiences. Hopefully, S1 or SLT owners?

This is my 1st new bike in 10+ years. Since 2000 I've been riding primarily Velomax Circuit Comps and Vista's. They have both been rock solid and durable, true since day one, still spin for a long time, have quiet hubs and on the heavy side. I am not thrilled at all by the Shimano's that were stock on my S1. I am hopeful that I can get a repeat performance out of the Williams 30 or ROL Race wheels minus the fact the rear hubs will not be quiet like the original Velomax's before Easton took over.

Please share your experiences, if any, concerning the Williams 30 and ROL Race wheelsets.

    Thanks!

Thanks, I have seen that + read the limited reviews on roadbikereview and roadbikeforum...I am specifically interested in hearing from Cervelo owners who have these wheels.

Re: Williams System 30 Wheels and ROL Race SL

    HI,

I have been riding a System 30 wheelset for just over 1 year now.  First on a Kuota Kebel (I know!) and now on my recently purchased S1.  I bought them because I thought they were a good compromise between weight and price.  Quality was unknown but for less than 500$ a was ready to take a chance.  The wheels have been solid, have stayed true and the bearings are still smooth and 5000+ KM on the road and a trainer.  They actually match the red and white on the S1 really nicely also I believe.  They are now the wheels I use for local Crits and TT and do both fairly well.  I am 148lbs and not particualry though on wheels mind you, however, there is always the 30X if you have a bigger stronger rider.  Mr Williams has also been really good at answering emails and queries.

In the end, I have been really happy with the purchases and would not hesitate to buy another set from WC.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Re: Williams System 30 Wheels and ROL Race SL

I bought the Williams 30 a couple of years ago and put them on a Kestrel Talon.  When I got an R3 that came with Easton Circuits, after a few rides with Eastons I swapped and put the Williams on the R3.  The lower weight was noticeable and I could not detect any noticeable downside to the switch (except for the clicking, see below).

In any event, the wheels are light, strong, durable and a bargain for the price.  I talked to the owner (Keith Williams if I remember correctly) a couple of times and he was very helpful, just try that with Mavic!  A few niggling complaints - the quick release levers are not as stylish as the Eastons, the hubs have a square rather than aero profile which again are not as aesthetically pleasing as the Eastons, and the rear hub clicks when you coast which I find annoying.

I've put a couple of thousand miles on a pair of William's 30s and don't have anything to gripe about.  They are a fair combination of weight, cost, performance.  I do think the spokes are a little too broad compared to some other blades out there that are much slimmer, so I do wonder just how much aero benefit there is when the spokes have so much surface area.  they are really not any faster even with the ceramic bearings than any other wheels that I have, deep rim or not.  Yes the hubs are fairly loud but that is not uncommon as I can hear most of the other riders too on group rides.  I will say this though it is a solid build.  They are just as true today as the day I got them.  I don't think I would buy them again being that there are so many offerings out there these days.

I ride the ROL Alp D'Huez from last year. I'm 175-180 depending on time of year and the wheels have been fantastic. Very strong and light. The owner of the company is extremely responsive and was very quick to send out a part I needed. Would recommend and buy from them again.

Hi, thanks for the feedback on the D'Huez. I am leaning in the direction of these wheels. Would you be able to comment on rear hub noise (pawls) and have you ever put your bike on a stand and spun the front/rear wheels unloaded to see how long they spin? If the front wheel is set properly and then clamped into the fork at the correct pressure it should pendulum back and forth. Looking forward to your response. Thanks again to all for your info.

I've had two 30X rear's and had problems with both. The bearings in the first one went south and during shipping back to Keith by FedEx, they manged to bend the rim!! Thank goodness I insured it and made money!!! The new wheel I bought to replace it started making noise from the hub in less than 1500 miles. Keith is a great guy and did what he could to make me happy, but I feel like the Twain made wheels are not strong enough for big guys like myself. So, I went with DT wheels and Shimano hubs.

I'm not a Cervelo owner (Cannondale CAAD9 here) but I came across this thread doing some searches.  I just got my set of Race SL two weeks ago as an upgrade to the Shimano WH-RS10 that came on my bike.  I can't begin to describe the difference in the bike with the ROL wheels on it.  They're stiffer, roll a ton better, and I can really tell the difference with the 30mm profile (and in crosswinds too...they definately catch more).

Sean was a great guy to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another set of ROL wheels.

     Hi:

I have a set of Race SL's on my R3. They are excellent wheels, have been bomb proff and kept true for two seasons, including a Chicago winter. I had them on a Cannondale Synapse first and after a few rides with the Easton circuts that came with the R3 I traded them out. The ROLs were quite superior, lighter and more responsive, rolled up nicely and hold up very well to a 5 day a week schedule. I am considering a second set of deeper rims since it is soooooo flat out here, but these are great climbers for the hill here and there. I have not ridden williams, but I can ceratinly recommend the ROLs

Did you ever buy the SL wheelset from ROL and if so how do you like them?

Re: Williams System 30 Wheels and ROL Race SL

Hi, I purchased a set of ROL d'huez wheels and mounted some Continental 4000s tires on them. Generally, I ride moderately rolling terrain in a windy environment. The semi-aero profile seems to balance the job where I live. Sean, the owner, put me into the d'huez rather than Race SL as I weigh in at about 155-160lbs.

I only have 2,500 miles on them so far as I split my time between road and mtn bike. The wheels remain true and I am impressed by how nicely they spin. They are definitely lighter than the stock S1 wheels (Easton Vista's) but I am not such a weight weenie that I have bothered to weigh them. I am very pleased with the purchase and do recommend the wheels. In various time trial comparisons, I have generally averaged about 1-1.5 mph faster on this wheelset than the stock wheels. I did try out some Easton wheels having had great success with Velomax (the original mfg name) in the past, but the latest iterations are just not as good and more pricey than the ROL wheels.

Also, as any fyi, since I live in the sticks I asked for a spare Sapim flate bladed spoke of each length.
