Chain rubs big chain ring while in the small chain ring and smallest cog

I'm building up a 2007 Soloist Team with SRAM Red.  I installed the crankset (compact crank) and torqued it down as recommended.  There is no play, and I am confident it is installed correctly.  I installed the rear derailleur, chain and shifters and it shifts through the full range of the cassette (11-26).  My problem is that while in the small chain ring and smallest cog (11t), the chain rubs the inside of the large chain ring.  I'm assuming this isn’t normal?... any ideas?  Thanks.

That is a cross chain gear and should not be used because of excessive chain line anyway, so if the chain rubs the chainring (it is doing so probably due to its reduced diameter versus a standard ring) it is understandable.

Agreed. Cross chaining should be avoided. Shift into the larger chainring and dump down a couple gears on the cassette.

Thanks for the info.  I definitely would never ride in those gears... just wanted to make sure I had everthing installed correctly.  This is my first attempt at building my own bike so I'm learning a lot as I go.

Same thing happens on my RS with Ultegra SL and a compact chainset.

Cross chaining happens on compact. I have a 53/39 on both bikes(SRAM Red on RS and Ultegra SL on SLT) and have no issues
