Test Team Black Clothing - An observation

I was hit (t boned) by a pick up truck recently, and whilst the driver inevitably said he did not see me, I tend to think the earlier black test kit can be a bit 'urban comouflage' in certain enviroments. The design does to some extent create a disruptive pattern effect which may in poorly lit streets with shops etc prevent the rider from standing out as much as possible. The 09 silver P3 also tends to blend in when in a gray urban enviroment. So perhaps not the best combo, particularly without the all white helmet, as was in may case. To brighten things up I will switch to the white Cervelo kit version and will greatly miss the good looking black version. Cheers.

I am hoping the 2010 kit will not have so much black (except for maybe some in the bibs) but more white and red for visibility/safety.

    safety aside...

one should always think twice about an all white kit, unless:

    1) they are under 25

    2) have single digit body fat

    3) just won the world championship

    4) are actually a member of CTT and forced to wear it

    5) have nothing to hide

And even some of these people can't pull it OFF

    Rob,

FWIW, the Black TT Bibs with the White Jersey look very good. The Red on the Bibs makes

a visibility difference, and more contrast helps. The White jersey is cooler.

    Thoughts:

I know some folks may shun the idea, but a very small obnoxious flashing light (5 w LED Dinotte 200, size of a c battery, uses 4AA's in a separate tiny holder) has virtually eliminated the 'T' intersection conflicts in busy Maui city areas I traverse at 20+MPH, especially at sunrise. It also seems to eliminate the left turners that have no idea of a cyclists speed. Amazingly it seems like a Startrek Deflector Shield!  I mount it under the handlebar. It can change from steady(3 intensities) to flashing (3 kinds) simply. It has plenty of light to see and avoid road glass when I launch before sunrise on my 6 hrs Maui rides, and Lava rock on the Kona Ironman route when I ride in the afternoon and just have to ride to Hawi and back.

    Visibility is life.

    Ride Safe,

    Jeff

One incident concerning visibility has stayed in my memory. While driving my car during a bright sunlit summer day on a tree-lined rural road, I was surprised to see a cyclist emerge from the shadows in the opposite lane of the road. Until he emerged, I did not know that he was there. He was outfitted in navy blue with a dark colored helmet and bike. As I cycle this road frequently, I became concerned about how I appear to vehicular traffic.

Visibility aside, when it's hot I wear white jerseys to stay cooler (don't absorb as much heat as darker colors).

I only wear my black jersey on group rides and bike tours, not when I ride solo(I wear bright yellow or red)

A white kit (especially shorts and socks) is impractical to keep clean, especially if you ride where it rains regularly. Plus you tend to get grease and oil stains from your tools or bike or from your gloves/hands as you reach into the back pockets.
