     Further Opinions?

      OK

My R3 SL will turn 2 yrs/20,000 miles/1,400,000 feet of climbing in Dec and was my dream bike too..still is.  I never considered deep dish wheels because I don't like the effects in side winds and this bike was meant for climbing for me.  I got Mavic R Sys wheels with all of that in mind and wish I hadn't  considering all the recalls etc.

Had a chance to try a set of Topolino CX 2.0 wheels recently....wow.

I'll treat myself to a set of the new Topolino  TrueBlack CTR2.0 wheels as soon as they are available.  Light, strong as can be, excellent climbers,  way comfortable, all black, no yelow.

Looking forward to hearing what you decided on.

my reynolds dv46's have been absolutely fantastic. i swap b/w them (use 'em on non-windy, non-technical descents), DA CL24's for technical braking routes and my powertap mavic open pro (training). the cl24's shine on the r3sl. DA hubs are so smooth.

Cheers guys...i appreciate your opinions and views...the more i hear and read the more i am inclined to go back to tubulars. Particularily now i 've seen the Reynolds Assaults in a tubular version for 2010. 1330g as opposed to 1521g for their Assault clincher. Think the 404 tubular is 1250g so the Assault tubulars are only 80g heavier and some £500 cheaper.

Granted clinchers give more peace of mind and are less hastle....but the performance of a tubular is just untouchable. Decisions, decisions...

I am a little surprised no one on here has any experience with the FFWD range of wheels. They of an F5R 240. DT swiss 240 hubs, aero spokes and 50mm carbon tubular rim, look nice..

Buying the frame was a simple choice..lusted after a Cervelo for a long time. Opted for the R3 SL as IMO its the best bike in their range...choosing wheels is proving to be a more complicated decision....

    R3SL Wheels

I had the same dilema - frame choice easy - wheel choice difficult.  I have Zipp 909's for my TT bike, but have always ridden and raced my road bike with clinchers.  As much as the thought of riding Zipp 202's every day brought a smile to my face, I decided to stay with clinchers for the obvious reasons.  I ended up buying the Reynolds MV32C UL's for my bike build (1280 gms).  Good Luck.

How about the soon to come Reynolds RZR in clincher or tubular?  Sub 900 grams.......per pair.

As far as Zipp durability, I use them as my everyday all purpose wheel.  Two years and probably 10,000 miles without ever touching them.

Right folks...have narrowed the search down to the following contenders...

Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR - 1595g - Clincher

    Zipp 404 - 1615g - Clincher

    Corima Aero Plus - 1560g - Clincher

    FFWD F5R - 1475g - Tubular

    Zipp 404 - 1250g - Tubular

Obviously there is a weight penalty with the clinchers, but also the convienence factor. Clearly the 404 tubular is the lightest, but also the most expensive. Worth noting the Mavic SLR clincher is lighter than the 404 clincher. Anyone any experience of the SLR clincher ?

The FFWD F5R is reasonable weight and the cheapest there. Could almost afford 2 pairs of these for the cost of the 404 tubulars. 225g saving on the 404 tubular over the F5R for £900, is that really worth it ?

    Thoughts guys welcomed....

totally biased here, but because I know and love the 404 tubs I ride...

AND because you have a super light, totally high end, Tour de France winning bike... and only one of the wheels listed above matches that. The 404 tub :o)

Joking aside the others are good or great wheels too. But to put it in perspective the 225g on the wheel is worth much more than the weight saving of the R3 SL over the standard R3 because its rotating mass.

Not only that but the aero properties of the double curved 404 rim section (not a straight v) and the dippled surface make it a very very aero wheel.

Which ever you get, ride them hard and often :o)

Pictures of R3SL that the wheels are for....any further suggestions now i can show you the new colour scheme...

Just when i think i've decided on what i'm having and think, they'll look great on my bike. I wake up the next day and think, hey, they'd be nice and round and round and round i go.....never actually coming to a concrete decision...had the frame since early October now, really need to make a decision on her wheels so i can test her out.  ;-)

I've done it.....i have taken the plunge and ordered her wheels...

After listening to all your comments and opinions i came to the decision that there was ONLY really one set of wheels that i could put in her....

2009 Zipp 404 tubulars.....they should be here by the end of the week....

Will post pics when they arrive....hope i've made the right decision.....no going back now...

     PRO

looks great - a perfect match to the new colour scheme too.

hope you're going to get the steerer cut above the stem.. I left mine for far too long, but it really is a must ;o))

Now i have wheels for her i will ride her on the rollers and tune the position. Soon as i am 100% with the bar height i'll cut the steerer again to the final length. I know it looks awful as it is but want to be really really sure before the final cut to length.
