Re: Wolf CL fork came with my Soloist-SL??

To comment on Wolf CL forks on bikes that were speced with Wolf SL this is something that was decided and given consent by each individual dealer. In the later summer of 2007 we did not have any Wolf SLs nor could we get any equivalent full carbon replacement forks so we gave all dealers an option.

    1) cancel their bike orders, which did not seem appealing to dealers knowing the demand for our product

    2) take the bike with no fork at a set discount so they could buy another company's carbon fork

    3) take the bike with a Wolf CL at a discount that reflects the difference between the Wolf CL and the Wolf SL

Most dealers took the later so that customer would not be upset over not getting the bike they wanted. If you felt that you over paid for the spec of your bike I would discuss this with your dealer. I am sure they will be reasonable in this regard.

I apologize if information like this was not passed on to consumers by the dealer. Please keep in mind that the person that makes the financial decisions in the store is not necessarily the person that sells you your bike and sometimes this information is not passed on.

    Sincerely

At Competitive Cyclist, though all the pictures show a Wolf fork, the bike is speced with an Easton EC 90 fork.

The wolf CL fork uses a chromoly steel steerer tube. Not aluminum.

i've just measured some forks i could get my hands on at a local shop, i measured as well pieces of steerers (left overs from cutting) to determine the specific steerer weights:

    Wolff CL (302mm steel steerer) : 479g  0.56g/mm steerer, star nut 10g

Wolff SL (310mm carbon steerer): 341g  0.2g/mm steerer, sleeve (75mm) with star nut 21g

    Alpha Q (300mm carbon steerer): 326g  0.2g/mm steerer

Easton EC 90 SLX (300mm carbon steerer): 294g

Easton EC 90 SL (300mm carbon steerer): 351g

the interesting thing is that if you substract the whole (visible) steerer off the forks, the CL fork is only 30g heavier than the SL fork, meaning that the blades are probably of similar weight and stiffness

most of the CL steerers i saw were a bit rusty

the Easton SLX fork has been criticized in a couple of magazines for its lack of lateral rigidity, being recommended only for very light riders using very stiff frames

Does any one know how deep the compression sleeve is on the SL, mine is glued and want to lower my stem but am unsure as can't see past the star nut...

    Many Thanks.

It depends on the age of the fork, they used to come with an 80mm insert but more recently, in the last year I believe, they came with a 125mm insert. My R3 SL purchased in August 2007 had the 125mm insert.
