What Cervélo frame (and groupset) does Gerard prefer/ride most?

    Dear Gerard,

I'm sure I'm not the only member of this forum who wonders what frame, cranksets, groupsets, tyres, forks you prefer - and which of the Cervelo products (frames) you most prefer to ride. In one of your recent blog entries, you listed all the specifications for a 'lightest bike' project you were putting together for the Etape ride -would you consider posting your favourite bike's specs for us? Maybe even a photo of your favourite bike, sir?

Of course, if you ride another brand frame then you're free to disclose that, too. We won't tell anybody. ;)

    Cheers,

    Darren.

I ride a Soloist Carbon with Wolf SL fork, SRAM Red prototype group, Hed Bastogne wheels, Vittoria corsa CX tubulars and a San Marco Ponza saddle (the one we spec on our Ultegra road bikes).

I liked the Red, but then Chris from customer service stole my bike and I haven't gotten it back yet. He did give me back my pedals though.

Gerard, more questions (a pseudo-interview!) on your personal ride and your preferences, if I may:

Why do you choose to stick with the standard Soloist Carbon instead of the new SLC-SL? Why do you prefer to stick with it in preference to any of your other (specifically the newer) designs?

Do you envisage yourself changing any of your components anytime soon?

How do you feel the SRAM Red groupset compares to the set up that Team CSC use (mostly Dura Ace with FSA crankset)?

What are your thoughts on the Team CSC set-up generally? Would you change any of the standard components (such as the groupset or fork) if you were the Team Director?

What made you settle on the Hed Bastogne wheels instead of any other wheels?

The reason I ask all these questions is because I believe there is much to be learned and much insight to be gained from the personal configuration preferences of a frame designer. ;)

The ability to chat with you on this forum, Gerard, is a unique opportunity that no other companies provide. Without being too sucky, mate, it's a privilege.  I'm certain that we all appreciate you making yourself available on this forum like you do.

Re: What Cervélo frame (and groupset) does Gerard prefer/ride most?

Sorry, probably no deep insights here. I ride the regular SLC because the SLC-SLs first went to our paying customers, then to a few athletes and our employees, and I'm at the end of the row. :-). That said, it's not exactly a punishment to ride an SLC. As for the Bastogne wheels, they are a bit of a trick. They are quite aero but they don't look it. I need all the advantage I can get, especially if people around me don't notice it as such! I'll probably change a few things just to try out parts, but I am not a tinkerer at all, if it wasn't for the need to try things I would have the same components on my bike for years. Team CSC's set-up is pretty good I think, we are actually in the midst of testing a ton of parts to see if the 2008 offerings can give any improvement or not.

A few athlete's ? It was nice to see that alle the CSC team had these bike's in TdF. Perfect !

Speaking of the team setup, it is an option to produce some TT handelbar in the future ? Or wheels ? Or will Cervélo only prduce frame(sets)

Maybe my english is not perfect, I'm from holland.

We'll look into the photo gallery option. As for other parts, we regularly have ideas for other parts, but we really don't have the time to produce components, much too busy with frames. But we have provided a few designs to other manufacturers in the past, and will likely continue to do so.

    O.k. thanks,

It is , I think, a very big market. You as marketleader in aero frames, to have your own aero wheel en bars.
Even if they are as aero as, lets say, a couple of cosmic carbone. You have the name..

Well, if anythings changes.. let us know..

    groeten terug
