    headset problem?

    Hi all,

I have 2007 soloist team with less than 500 miles on it. When I hold down the front brake firmly and try to push the bike forward, fork swings back and forth as I move the bike. Does't it supposed to stay still? It swings about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and it automatically makes the top part of the headset to move back and forth as well. It doesn't move that much, just slightly , but still I'm worried whether its something normal or damaged headset.

I'll be awaiting for your advise.

    thanks,

It sounds like you just need to tighten your headset as they can get loose from time to time depending on how the bike was assembled.  This can be done very easily at home if you are familiar with the procedure or I am sure your LBS would do it on the spot for you as well.

If it is swinging a 1/4 inch that is alot, dont ride it until it gets fixed.  The bike shop that assembled it should have a talking to, headsets do settle in place sometimes and give a little movement, but not a 1/4 inch.

I had the same problem - It needed another spacer so that the steerer tube cap could tighten up the headset.

Shop I own has had problems with headsets coming loose on Cervelo. I am not sure what model fork yours comes with as the ones we get vary from bike to bike. Some have to have an alloy shim bonded in the carbon steerer, others need the standard locking device replaced with a more secure one. Keep going back to shop if it comes loose, it shouldn't. Fitting carbon paste on a carbon steerer with a carbon stem help too.

Spend the money and get a Cane Creek Solos. Similar quality to a King headset. If your head set is loose you will hear a clicking sound when you lock the front brake and rock the bike back and forth. There is a torque setting for the cap. If you follow that you won't have a problem. Your fork will flex when you rock the bike. Don't confuse that with a loose headset. The only reason that you would have to add a spacer to the steerer tube to eliminate a loose headset is if the shop cut the steerer tube too long. I personally think that on both steel and carbon steerer tubes you are better off to put a small spacer above the stem, this allows the stem to be in full contact, especially important on carbon tubes.
