    Re: 2011 Models

Yes, I agree that the 2010 R series models look a lot better than the 2009 models, especially for the R3 which does look better than the R3SL. When does Cervelo typically reveal the new paint colour schemes? In terms of changes to the bikes, I'm guessing that they already revealed the R5CA so any improvements to the 2011 models would be based on trickel down technology from that bike?

I speculate that any surprises could be in the P series bikes given that some competitors like Trek have announced some new bikes in that area which are aimed at increasing their market share in that area.

I wouldn't worry too much about losing out on a 2010 frameset whilst you wait for the 2011 models to be announced.  I bought a 2009 R3 frameset about 3 months ago (primarily because it was half the price of the 2010, but more importantly because I liked the 2009 colour scheme more than the 2010) and there are still 2008 framesets out there for the taking.  The big dealers will have lots of stock of 2010 framesets well into 2011, and will start discounting these once the 2011 models have been released....unless of course the 2011 colour scheme is hideous, then maybe the 2010 models will go up in price!!!

" I see 2011 bikes implementing BBright and tapered headtubes, ICS3 with possible weight shavings and layups... especially for the S series. Adding a 4th model for the R and S series would be a great surprise."

-- my guess for 2011 models.

Talking colors -  I think a few of the test team riders are hoping for a better looking 2011 S2. The 2009 S2 was a regular steed among the team, being used for a few races and in training. I even saw a photo on twitter yesterday of some test team riders still using the 2009 S2 for training, however I'm yet to see the 2010 S2 used at any level.....

    That's normal.

It's usual for pro teams to trickle down last year's race bikes to this year's training bikes. That appears to explain your observation: that S2s were raced last year, and 2009 (same bikes?) are training bikes this year.

CTT race bikes this year appear to be mainly S3s. Which, since like me I'm guessing Cervelo TestTeam also has a budget, probably means there's no need to supply new 2010 S2s to the team this year.

I can't imagine cost has much to do with it. The cost to manufacturer an S2 compared to and S3 would be minimal.

And if you follow Joao or Ted's twitter accounts you will realize the "looking the part" and emitting the "vibe" are on the agenda.

The 2009 S2 was used in the Tour of Qatar and flanders last year when the S3 was there to use, and in 2010 the nicer looking S3 got a run.

Just an observation - maybe its just coincidence....

    Re: 2011 Models

Cervelo S2s were there in January 2009 for the TestTeam (the mold is the same as the SLC SL), but The S3 was new and not yet available. Remember S3s weren't delivered to dealers until after the racing season had already begun. So while the cost difference between S2 and S3 might not be large, switching to S3s after already starting on S2s incurs the full cost twice.

Now in 2010, the Team rides (mostly) the S3. This supports your point that the manufactured cost probably isn't that much higher than the S2. But again this year, as last, they apparently chose not to supply the team with both models.

Remember CTT was initially concieved as a low-profile "test" team for product development, and only after Carlos and Thor expressed interest did it seem possible to stretch the mission to include a higher level of racing. But I don't think the budget stretched as far as the good race results would have justified in a "non-test" team.

The only thing I know is that the RS frameset cannot be bought next year. You will have to buy the whole bike.

Probably around 15-20% if you refer to the prices posted on some online retailers.

Hearing that Cervelo may use a proprietary BB on the 2011 R series. Possibly a tapered headtube as well. Nothing earthshaking there and probably predictable.

With the R5Ca out is there a future for the R3SL? Maybe just lighten the R3 and just have an R3 and the R5 (pretty big price gap there!).

Just hope they don't get the idea of using the coloring from Thor Hushovd's Tour bike!!

Being a Campy fan for years I know I would buy an older bile than "upgrade" to a newer bike like the R5 or a new S3 which demands a proprietary drive system..

I don't know what may be coming, but they certainly have us speculating and talking about it.  I am not a fan of proprietary components from any manufacturer and I hope Cervelo will continue to have at least some bikes that will use standard, more readily available BB and crank systems.  In any event, I doubt there will be anything new that will change my world or suddenly or dramatically change my riding style.  I just hope there is something for me when it is time to put my R3 out to pasture and buy an new frame.

I couldn't agree anymore. Standardized parts are consumer friendly. Why try to corner customers both returning and new with proprietary components?

Ultimately it will be up to the market to decide if it's acceptable but from what I can see it won't be easy. A new proprietary drive system for bikes worth more than $3000+? If it were a Trek bike at 1400 I could see it happening but the average consumer will always drive the market vs. the smaller demographic of wealthy people. We all know how "FIREWIRE" worked out for Apple. Now they have adopted the standardized USB port.
