    KMC or dura ace chain

Just upgraded from Ultegra to Dura ace 9000, sing Rotor 3D with Q rings, prefer KMC chains but not sure which would work besy. Rotor is compatible with 11 speed and according to KMC website so is the X11. Any recomnendations

I've pretty much tried them all. To me a chain makes little difference. I've run KMC X10SL, DA7800, DA7900 Ultegra, SRAM PC-all of them, currently Rotor (the 30 dollar one). It all boils down to how much you want to pay. If your rings and cassette are in good condition...IMO...the chain makes little difference.

Almost always, I'd agree.  My one bad experience is with a DA chain on the new SRAM Red 1190 cassette.  While it works it's really noisy when shifting.  With the DA cassette it's smooth as silk.

For what they cost, as a proportion of the total price of a bike, I would always use the chain that matches the rest of the drivetrain.  In this case, I would suggest you can't beat DA.  It's what Shimano designed the drive train around after all.  BTW, I run DA components with Q and QXL rings

Thanks for your advice. Do Garmin Sharp use dura ace chains on there team bikes? They are certainly well tested!

Running a DA chain and cassette with FSA-SLK Light crank. No complaints. Before this I had an Ultegra chain. Going back even further, I had a SRAM chain on a Tiagra group. I don't think the chain is going to make a big difference as long as you don't go bargain basement. ----- Cervelo S5 Ultegra Group FSA-SLK Light 53-39 Dura Ace 27-12 Ultegra WH-6700 Tubeless Michelin Comp Service Course 4 Richey WCS 4-AXIS

I am running Ultegra on my S2, and when I broke a chain last year the shop put DA on as a replacement. Huge difference with the DA chain, shifts better, less rubbing in cross chain combos (thinner, I guess), quieter. I sticking with DA chains in the future, though to be honest I haven't used KMC chains.

The reason I ask is that the Dura ace sh ifts slickly it seems noisy, mechanical whirring, should it be quiet or am I expecting too much?

Andrew - You are using the new 11speed Qrings, right?

Not sure, didn't know they made specific 11 speed rings, bought these in April (compact 50 34) and checked with Rotor Uk before I bought the dura ace 9000 who said it is compatible. Is this why its noisy?

There is no 11 speed specific Q-Ring. From Rotor's website, "Design works for all 10 and 11 speed groups." I also spoke with a Rotor rep at Interbike...and he didn't say there was a "new" 11 speed specific Q Ring.

I think this mythical Rotor "11 speed Q-ring" comes from this picture of Campy Q-rings that is used from time to time and floats around the internet that has 11s on it.

Many new chainrings have that whirring sound (great way to describe it actually!) until the edges of the teeth become naturally buffed by the chain's normal action sliding over them while pedaling. Keep riding, it'll get better.

My new SRAM 50-34 was downright crunchy for the first 200 km or so (guessing on the distance).

I've often wondered if a person could see the polishing effect on the teeth by looking. Your black anodized Q-rings might be an interesting case, might be able to see the silver edges becoming visible where the buffing is taking place?

The back anodizing on my Q-Rings wore off in a few rides. The coating on my old Stronglight CT2's lasted way longer.

Haha...good call on the Campag rings.

Here is how my ring looks after about 2000 miles. I ran the DA7901 and KMC x10SL previously and noticed no difference in noise or shifting performance compared to the Rotor SH 10CR I'm using now.
