hmm perhaps this is what happens when marketing and sales have different objectives (dealers having to place orders on bikes before they are even announced)

yeah it is out there now.... R3 Disc, The wheels are HED Ardennes Disc, looks pretty cool!

The HED Ardennes would be a nice set of stock wheels to get with the bike, as they're great wheels in their own right. In general I think that is/was one of the bigger gripes about Cervelo- handing out $250 boat anchor wheels with $3000+ bikes.

Amen to that! I never minded the cheapo wheel spec as I always figured the spec'ed wheels were for using with a trainer tire or just swapping at the shop for some real wheels. I think what the real problem is - it hurts sales and reviews of Cervelo bikes. Anyone who goes in and tries a new R3 which is designed to be stiff yet light and comfortable, goes and does a test ride with a set of heavy $200 wheels with lousy tires at 120psi and thinks "this bike isn't stiff and comfortable at all!"

Not thrilled about being married to a "custom crank".  Hoping the C bike doesn't follow suit. Happy that they're going with through axles.

Custom crank beats custom wheelset a la the Specialized direction with the Tarmac Disc.  I have heard of a captive audience but that is beyond ridiculous

I agree on that!  I understand the compromise on keeping racy handling with the short stays and something has to give.  Just for me, personally, I don't like limited options.

I imagine that the front fork would work with my 2014 R3. I wonder how much it would cost to buy a 2016 front fork and paint it glossy black and blue to match. A front mechanical disc brake would make all the difference on my chinese clinchers.

I think maybe you can have it both ways, you just need to be really creative. Look what Gerard Vroomen did over with the OPEN U.P. bike and the dropped chainstay to get stiffness, tire / disc clearance, road handling, and still be able to run regular road cranks. Sure it has longer chain stays than the R5, but that is because it is built to handle huge mountain bike tires or 700x 40c cross tires. I'd think if you did something like that and only built it for 700x25 or 27c wheels you could get pretty close to road handling chain stays plus normal road cranks and spacing for discs. That would be an awesome combo.

Does anybody here understand and could explain why a custom crank is needed with the disk option? Is it due to the disk brakes, through hole axels or both?
