    11 speed 11-32 cassette on short-cage DA 9070 RD

I've searched far/wide, and I know this question has been asked many times, and it seems as if the answer is dependent on the length of the RD hanger. So, I'm asking whether anyone on this forum attempted to use an 11-32 cassette on a short-cage Ultegra/Dura Ace RD. I'm running a 50/34 compact up front on a 2015 S5. Been off the bike for a while, and I'm thinking I might need as much help as possible for an upcoming event. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks again.

I know that the pros are being provided 11-32's for certain race stages that are extremely steep and they only have Short cage DA Di2, but to make it work, you're going to have unusable small/small and possibly a couple of cogs.

I would suggest picking up a Long Cage Ultegra 6800 RD which seems to be selling for only $60.

Your shifting will be great and you won't have a thing to worry about. Also with a bit more chain, you'll get a few more miles out of a chain.

Once you try out an 11-32, 50/34, you'll find you go places and climb routes that you wouldn't enjoy with even an 11-28.

    Jeff

Only way that I'm aware of to run a 32t cassette on ANY road bike is a long cage RD.

Since you are running di2, an ultegra 6870-gs long cage Rd is what you want. I've done an install for someone who wanted compact cranks and 11-32 and it works great. Unfortunately it's not 60$ ....that's for the mechanical version. http://www.artscyclery.com/Shimano_Ultegra_Di2_6870_GS_Rear_Derailleur_11-SPD/descpage-SHIRD6870GS.html

Yea, I figured that he's running the mechanical version since I didn't see Di2 in the title and forgot that 9070 is Di2..D'oh LOL..  I have tried the short cage DA Di2 and while it would be ok for limited uses if that's all I had, the Mid Cage is the correct way to go, and it's flawless. And, yea, it's $170 as inexpensive as I can find...

I am running All DA Di2 except for the RD 6870 Di2 Mid cage. (they call them short cage and mid cage on the Di2...)  It's a perfect set up.

When I built up the Di2, I read up on it all, and was pleasantly surprised that it took me maybe 2 hours to complete.. Internal battery in the seat post, etc.

I do have a spare e Tube cable, (the longest I could need) as I had a friend rip the RD one on a ride one day..

The thing with bigger cassette (11-32) in the back is that you will need longer chain 114-116 links.  The long derailleur hanger will allow to take up the slack of a longer chain.

Theoretically, a short cage with big cassette and long chain links will work if you stayed on the big ring to take up the chain slack.  The B-tension maybe need some playing around and a softer tension on the hanger.  However, that maybe a problem in the real world where you need all your gears to work.

Just a thought, can you buy a replacement long cage and add it to your current RD?

I've heard conflicting things about this. Some say it could be done. Others say it can't, due to the angle of the parallelogram. Either way, it's a non-starter because I lack the ability to reassemble things after I've disassembled them. Looks like my options are: i) get a mid-cage Ultegra RD ii) get myself back into shape. I'll take a stab at the second option and go from there. Thanks everyone.

I'd say get the Mid Cage RD. There's always a bunch of DB's who will say 'get more fit'. Well, no matter how fit you are, if you are near mountainous terrain, you'll find steeper and steeper routes and do them on longer rides, and long after you were really 'done' for the day! Going up to the Ski lifts at Mt. Baldy, I've never heard anyone say 'I had plenty of gears'. Many of the strongest were still forced to stand to climb! I'm all for the right equipment for the task at hand!

I agree.  Get the right gearing for the terrain.
