Help me decide on a wheelset: Dura Ace C35 vs Reynold Assaults SLG

I'm looking at finally getting a wheelset upgrade for my R2...right now, looking at Dura Ace C35 clinchers as an all-rounder...but a part of me wants to go all-carbon (that sexy look). Right now, my budget allows for about $2K...local shops here have the C35s for $1999 CAD, but one store has 2015 Reynolds Assaults SLGs for $1999 (normally $2500 retail). The Assaults are following the trend of wider rims, while the C35s are more narrow, since they are 'old'. I never ride in the rain, but my only concern is braking on all-carbon. Is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be? I primarily ride on flats but where I live there are lots of rolling hills, so having an aluminum brake track may be beneficial over the all-carbon assaults. I know Shimano makes 'bombproof' wheels...even considering RS81 C35s too, which are half the price of DA C35. Is it insane I want to spend the cost of my bike on a wheelset? This hobby is making me crazy! :) Anyone riding the Assaults SLGs? Or the Dura Ace C35? Or what would you consider for $2K CAD? Please, somebody help me spend my money!

Widen your search. I suggest you look at Boyd 44s. Google Boyd Wheels...

I was a little late to the "full carbon clincher club" for the same concerns- braking, noise, durability, etc. Finally took the plunge and I couldn't be more happy with them (Zipps/Rovals). Braking is as good as my aluminum clinchers and aside from a pretty cool whir when braking no squealing at all. Ride quality has much improved as well. I agree with the above post- definitely shop around at that price point. I've been intrigued by the Boyd 44's for my R3...

I have the Reynolds with a power tap in them and I too was concerned with the braking power and durability... I am not sue where you are from in Canada but in Ontario we have a climb in Collingwood called Scenic Caves we climbed it and I came back down it.

When you come down that hill you have to be on  the brakes or you are quickly out of control on rough pavement (it has since been repaved) needless to say I was on them most of the way down and they did not even get hot.. I have hit some pretty nasty pot holes when in a peloton and they  have not flinched.

Braking in the wet sucks the few times I have been caught in the rain but if its dry you will forget that your are braking on carbon rims until you hear that sweet hiss they make when you stop.

GO carbon, thank me later! lol

Thanks for the input guys. Looked into Boyd's 44m clinchers, they do look pretty great. Price with their new Eternity hub will be $1850 USD...which after the CAD exchange rate, duties and taxes, I'd be looking at $3K CAD. At that price, what are my other best options for a 'name brand' locally?

I am not sure about dealers out there. But I know lots of us in the GTA deal with www.wheelsofbloor.com as our local shop they have some killer deals right now on ENVE and I know for a fact they have build up pretty impressive builds well north of 10k and shipped them to the island.

I can personally attest to Zipps and Enves holding up to some pretty nasty under takings I know Hutch uses his 202's in the mountains of California  and Rmerka came down mount baldy on Enves beside us. Neither one of the rims flinched and took whatever they tossed at them.

Reynolds makes a great rim too like I said I have the assaults 1 generation older then the ones your looking at and they are bomb proof.... http://www.wheelsofbloor.com/accessories/category/wheels/ the 45's look like a sweet deal! and VERY WELL MADE!  whatever you buy remember .... this thread is worthless without pics ;)

Thanks! I will contact them and see what's available and what else is available. The price on the 45's look awesome, but I'm looking for clinchers though :/

See above. Look around. I've seen places heavily discounting them. Of course that's USD. I'm not totally in tune with the exchange rate. Also, someone is always looking to sell Zipps on ebay for about what they paid in a pro deal (unused) after they decide they don't want them.

If you're looking for something in $CAD check this guy out. I'm not a customer, but I've emailed him for some info and his prices are good. It all seems to be on the up and up. WMD; Wheels of mass Destruction http://ridewmd.com/wpblog/ He used to be in Montreal, his blog now indicates he's out in Vancouver.

So I ended up getting the Dura Ace C35s. Rode them on a long ride yesterday, and wow, what a difference vs the stock RS010s. Also got 4000s rubber. Wheels were nice and stiff, but also a very comfy ride, you can really feel the power go down with each pedal stroke. Was able to hold higher average speed and crushed the climbs. Really enjoying these puppies! LBS hooked it up. Thanks guys for chiming in. What should be my next upgrade?? Here's a picture as requested :) http://imgur.com/W7eY5hM
