    strange cassette issue

I just replaced my crank set with an Ultegra 50-34 on my 2016 S3, in doing so I changed my cassette to an 11-23 (10 sp).  By the way the front shifting is like butter, almost like my Di2 it is so responsive, no drops just perfect.  But it does not like is the 11 tooth cog, no matter what I do, add spacers up front to change the chain line or any other adjustment I can think of the chain hops on the 11 cog.  Switch out to a 12-28, same set up and no issues with chain hop on the 12 tooth cog.  I check chain wear, still under first measurement, so still quite tight.  I spent a lot of time playing trying to get the 11 cog to work with no luck, but the simple switch to a 12-28 and the 12 cog works perfect.  I even disassembled the 11-23 cassette and reassembled to make certain everything was OK.  Strangest thing, this crank set, rear derailler (been on the bike for ever) etc just does not like the 11-23 cassette 11 tooth sprocket. Just curious if anyone has an idea other than checking the bent hanger and adding spacers to adjust the front chain line done it.

    thanks

good thought, it might be the key point, the chain was sized for a large cassette with a 12 minimum sprocket, and maybe an 11 is not a go?

Put the chain in the small/small combo and check if the Rd has no tension. Or take a picture and post.

    Re: strange cassette issue

Hi goodboyr, I think I have to accept that I can not do both 12- 28 and 11-23 on same set up.  Since I bought the compact crank for the climbing and the old legs, I think I have to accept that 12 minimum is what it is.  When I had the 11-23 on I had to set the limit screw to lock out the 11 and all was well.  I liked that because it gave me narrower increments between shifts, but the 12-28 gives me 10 gears so I have a choice.  But the chain length has to be what it is for the bigger cassette.

I'd check the Derailleur hangar, and go through the factory procedure on B tension adjustment

procedure. I've checked many new bikes and found 5/5 were way out of alignment. At SDSR

talking with our SRAM neutral support wrench, he indicated that at least 80% of bikes folks bring with shifting issues need their derailleur hangar aligned.

    Hope this helps!

    Jeff

    Re: strange cassette issue

Thanks Jeff, what I find most weird is it is like butter with one cassette the 12-28 and will not sit on the 11 sprocket of the 11-23 and what happens on the 11 it looks like it is trying to shift/ lift off.  So that makes me think that maybe goodboyr is right the chain is too slack in that position.  I think if the derailler hanger was out of alignment then it would be out for both cassettes in the highest gear position.  Also I tried changing the chain line with spacers between the bb and crank and that made absolutely no difference at all.  So since I want the shifting to work more for the larger cassette than the smaller cassette then I think it is what it is unless I want to change chains when I change cassettes which is a possibility with the right link.

You are well within the capacity of a regular Ultegra Rd, so removing one link should fix this. Can you post a picture of the drivetrain in the big-big cross chain position. That will show how much room you have to shorten the chain.

posting pics is a pain on this forum but finally got it as you can see lots of tension in 50-12 drive train

That looks like an Ultegra 6600 fd and Rd.....is this correct? As well, please send pics of the small/small and big/big positions.

correct on both accounts, yes they are, in the cross overs the rear derailler is at its max or minimum ie big, big it is pretty much fully extended and small small it is at its minimum with not a whole lot of tension on the chain.  I think this combo is as far as this derailler can go, it still seems odd that the only cog combo that is a problem is the 11 tooth x 50 (I was not interested in trying to get it to work in cross over) and the only thing of interest is to use the 11- 23 because the jumps between gears is smaller than say the 12- 28, I suspect a 12 - 25 would work fine, I just do not have one.

thanks for your interest in this strange behavior.

    Re: strange cassette issue

Yup. The Ultegra 6600 Rd was made before the widespread popularity of compact cranks. It has insufficient capacity. I have fixed this in a number of bikes in our club by changing out the Rd to an Ultegra 6700 Rd. It was redesigned with much bigger capacity. They are still available new on eBay and from some online sellers. Pretty cheap solution to your problem.
