Aero Question: Old S3 vs New R5

I have been thinking about upgrading my old 2009 Cervelo S3 frame for the new 2018 R5.
Does the old S3 still have an aero advantage over the newest R5?  What other benefits would I see over my older Cervelo frameset?

    Regards
    Lee Cooper

Re: Aero Question: Old S3 vs New R5

My guess is that the 2018 R5 would be just as aero and more stiffer than the original S3. I recall in past threads a comparison between the original S3 with the first generation S5 (S5 more aero) which was then compared to the 2014 R5 (R5 was less aero than S5 by ~7w). Now the 2018 R5 is more aero than the 2014 R5 and stiffer. Also the new R5 would also be more comfortable with the thin seatstays and able to have 28mm tires.

I finally found that old Cervelo Form thread you were talking about:

     So, solo at 40kph/25mph... power required: S5 240 watts, '14 S3 ~244 watts ; '14 R3/5 ~254.6 watts.

I would be really interested to know what the "required watts" would be for the 2018 R5

The GCN video at 9:00 state 4watts more efficient than the previous R5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkJSaJ5wrgk Cervelo S5 vs original S3 4:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeP4DgEcCZk&index=1&list=RDQMDK3z4BZQHC4

Also, I am assuming that the new r3 puts you in a more aero position (should you slam the stem) when needed as it has a lower headtube than the old s3.  I think I recall your body makes up 2/3? of the drag? on the flat. If you keep your dimensions the same, then what Kookie wrote.  Also depends on if you do solo ride, group rides, how fast you go etc. if this really matters. The marketing is you will get a stiffer and much better handling bike. Pull the trigger and post some pics!

If you do decide on the R5, which one are you getting rim or disc? I'm thinking of getting the 2018 R5 but can't decide on rim or disc.

I would go with the rim brake version.
Last year I upgraded my drivetrain on my old S3 to SRAM eTap, so my thoughts are to just swap the components.
However I may delay the frame swap for one more year; I would like to buy new Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon SL UST wheels and a SRAM Red Cassette this year?

I think the new one will be better than old. Cause the producer will improve and these mistakes.
