    S5 2016 Tire clearance

Hi all, Inam having an issue with my S5, the bike came with Enve 4.5 and Schwable V-Guard 25C tires. For my luck the rear tire got damaged during the first 3 rides and I replaced both tired with GP4000 SII 23C. Today I wanted to put back some 25 and I ended up buying the same Schwable tire, I added a black tape to the inside of the chainstays so if the tire rub it wont damage the paint. Did 4 rides , took the wheel out and found the tape is all messed up like if the tire was rubbing. After some checking I can see the tire is closer to the right chainstays than the left. Is that normal? I also though the S5 2016 was 25c compatible. Any advice?

    Hi ranger052,

It sounds like this recently just started happening. If that's the case double check your wheel is seated correctly in the dropouts. If your rear brake is not centered one of the brake pads can push on the wheel forcing it to sit crooked while you tighten the quick release. Open up your brake completely and reinstall the wheel pushing down on the saddle as you tighten the quick release.

The S5 accepts 25mm actual measured size tires. Most marked 25mm tires actually measure up to 28mm. The S5 is sold with 23mm Continental tires or 25mm Mavic tires, both measure 25mm. A 25mm Schwalbe will fit but likely measures larger and will not give you the recommended 4mm clearance at the chainstays.

Hi, Just did that and all is properly set up and tight. I think the issue is what you mentioned, the tire is 25 but when inflated it goes up to 27 or so. Do you know any other tire that could fit besides Mavic? Thanks

    Re: S5 2016 Tire clearance

Vittoria tires have typically measured close to size but unfortunately, we have not measured different brands of tires for comparison. Tire size is affected by rim width as well so the same tire will measure differently on two separate wheels.

As a safe guide, any 23mm marked tire will fit, most are 24mm or 25mm actual size so you get the extra comfort and grip of the larger volume tire. When choosing a marked 25mm tire you will need to accept that tolerance will be around 2-3mm on each side of the tire and may cause rub during hard sprints or climbs.(our chainstay spacing is 33mm)

If you are a big powerful rider who puts out a lot of watts, I would recommend staying with a 23mm tire. If you're smaller and your watts don't blow up your Garmin (like me), the larger 25mm tire can work :)
