    Wheel upgrade for 2018 R3

Hi Guys, hoping some of you veterans can provide some advice out there...I am looking to get some new wheels for my R3...currently have Dura Ace C35 9000 clinchers...is there a better set of similar wheels in 2019 I can buy? Was thinking of ENVE 3.4 but my wallet is saying no...what options do I have for a $2K budget or so? Looking to get an all-rounder, but also like to climb as well...thanks!

You can go a lot less expensive than $2k for a good carbon wheel set, unless you need to have a "brand". I shopped around extensively 4 years ago, eventually hearing about ICAN wheels. I also found someone who had ridden on them for a good while. After his glowing reports, I decided to give them a try. Back then they were about $450 for a 38mm deep clincher wheel with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes and what has turned out to be a very good set of hubs. The pair weighed 1342g (advertised at 1340g +/- 20g) when I received them and were round and true. I read all the bad stories about "Chinese wheels", so I have to admit I was quite skeptical and more than a little apprehensive about them. I rode them very gingerly at first, but as I put miles on them my trust grew. In the last 3 riding seasons, they have held up perfectly, are still true and are about as efficient as they come. The wheels completely changed the character of my R2 that I use for the hillier rides here in western Maine. I also tried them on a local coastal century ride a couple of years ago. They made the ride easy. I'm sure price has crept up a little on ICAN wheels, but I'm also sure they are still a bargain. I spread my miles among 3 bikes that I use depending on ride type, so I only have about 3500 miles on these wheels. I average about 3000 miles a year during our all too short riding season. I'm ordering a new set of ICANs to replace the aluminum wheels on my disc brake endurance bike.
2015 R2 fun (climbing and all around) bike, upgraded some to become just a hair lighter in 2016 (it was an orphan leftover at the LBS). Glad I picked it up.

Have a look at Caden Wheels. Put them on my 2016 r3 6 months ago and they have been superb. Well made, great hubs and skewers, good braking for carbon wheels and light weight. I'm running the decadence 38mm , but even a 50mm set are still super light. Never had any brake pad squeal either. Some good clips on youtube with the owner Ben worth watching regardless of what brand you go for.

I have an R2 with these as a wheel upgrade. They are AWESOME! It is a 46mm Front and a 60mm in the Rear. They stay easily within your budget. I change out wheels every 2 years and these are going to be replaced with ones that will be able to handle the new Sram 12 speed. The exact same wheels... only 12 speed.

The mybikeshop.com has recently had very good deals on Hed wheels. Other brands too, for example Reynolds.

Wheels update--managed to buy some used Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 wheels...first verdict after trying them...they don't seem to spin up or accellerate up hills as fast as the C35s...could be my weak legs early on in the season, Lol. But they do look sexy. Will give them some time before contemplating a switch back to C35s or not.

Aeolus Pro 3 is a great wheel. Nice find. They are robust, so weight is not the lightest out there, but you won't have any problems with them. At around 1500 grams they are a little lighter than my old aluminum Rol race SL clinchers and your C35s. Rotational weight is a weighty subject as we all know so go as light as you can stand (dare) on the tire choice. I agree that Spring legs are definitely not ideal for testing new equipment!
