S2 Dura Ace 7900 front derailleur cable seems stuck

Hi all I am trying to get my DA7900 front derailleur on my 09 S2 reinstalled after simply removing it for cleaning. During disassembly I didn't touch the shifter end, didn't change the cable as it seems fine. However, it now seems stuck...flipping the up-or-downshift levers does nothing to move the cable even when I am just holding it firmly in my hand (isn't even connected to the derailleur yet, that's the easy part!), there's just no movement at all in the cable despite the shifter levers throwing their full length. Ideas? Thanks

Maybe the cable nipple left the guide to hanging it into at the brake lever ..check it at under the brake lever hose ..

I think you're right, the cable moves freely when I pull the housing where it enters the top tube, so the issue is definitely in the shifter assy

Cable has probably frayed and broke inside shifter . It takes a bit of work to get inside and pick the broken bits out .

Actually what happened is the sintered metal "cup" inside the shifter (that the cable end seats itself in) broke (the metal is apparently very brittle), so the cable end "falls out" internally when a shift is actuated. Never seen this before and am frankly very disappointed that a vaunted Dura Ace part would break in such a bizarre way. It's also become very difficult to find replacement 10-speed parts; I have a used shifter coming off eBay but who knows how long that will last. On the bright side I just bought a NOS R3 when I realized the life expectancy of the 09 S2 i now limited due to the 10-speed issue.

What’s the relevancy of the S2 frame to 10 speed? You can run an 11 and 12 speed on it.

Agreed but the frame is now in its 11th year so can't really justify the upgrade cost to 11-12...
