    2018 R3 vs 2016 R5

    Hello,

For a little over 2 years I have enjoyed my 2018 R3 (rim).  Bought the R3 because I love my 2014 S3.  Bought my S3 because I love my Soloist Team (aluminium).

To be honest I cannot afford a new R5, and would struggle to buy a used 2018 R5.  But there is a nice used 2015 R5 frameset for sale locally.

My 2018 R3 is a great all-round bike, but if I’m honest it’s not as fast up hills as I’d like it to be.  Assuming I moved my across components; wheels, groupset (Shimano Ultegra Di2 6870) etc, I wondering if the 2015 R5 might climb better/faster?

    Thanks in advance.

Check out excel sports. They have framesets available for 2000. The r5 is a great ride. You won’t be disappointed.

Thanks wwwc9, sounds tempting. But I live in the UK, so once I add on the Shipping, Import Tax and VAT all the discount disappears :(

I think the 18 r3 is as stiff in the bb as the 16 r5 and the r5 has a more upright geometry than the 18 r3. So I think you would get marginal gains at best. The r3 maybe 150 grams heavier, but that’s not a lot. I haven’t ridden the r3 but I’m guessing it may be a little muted as they ride them for pair roubaix. I would stick with the newer model as you’re benefitting from newer tech ie Squoval max, and if you want to climb faster, i would invest in a wahoo trainer and trainer road. If you can stay in relative shape and can hit your numbers, that will have you going in the spring and peaking in the summer. I’d also wait for the r5 new version to look for a sale on an 18 r5. I have that and it’s a great frame imo. It’s lighter, a racer geometry, suppose to be stiffer in the bb than rca, in the end, our best climbing imo, is when we have the fitness to push ourselves, find that good level of suffering, and persist. That comes from being in shape and that’s why I’m advocating for the trainer if you don’t have one already. Plan B would be to get a 2018+ r5 as that’s where I think you’ll notice a difference in the frames . Hope this helps. Good luck.

    Thanks for the comprehensive answer.

Buying a new 2019 R5 is a brilliant idea!! Only yesterday I spoke to my local bike shop about ordering one.  He too has ridden the current R5, and thinks it's one of the best bikes he's ever ridden.

So Monday when I've sorted the finances I'll be placing my order :-)
