    F. Derailleur cable is sawing my frame!

Is this a problem for anyone else? New 2009 Cervelo S2 has on about 500 miles and the f. der cable is cutting into the frame. Bike was bought from Competitive Cyclist as a full setup with SRAM Rival. It looks bad enough on the black, would hate to see what it would look like on white paint, not to mention all the crap that's going into the frame through the gaping hole (the hole is over 1cm long and at least 5mm at it's widest point).

I'm not impressed at all, didn't think this would be a problem on a frame of this caliber.

I have a couple of pics, but how do I post them?

     How to post photos

You can get around the problem of the cable cutting the frame by adding a bit of heat shrink insulation around it during installation.

It is hard to tell from the pics but I assume that is the hole as you look down the seat tube from the top. There should have been a small plastic tube that the cable runs through installed. That way the cable rubs on the  inside of the plastic tube and not the frame.  Cervelo ships it with every frame.

Can you post a picture of your front derailleur.

The only way I can see an elongation forming like this is if the cable hole was drilled in an incorrect position or the attachment to the front derailleur is such that the angle of the cable to the hole is greater than it should normally be.

Yes, you are correct. The hole was originally just barely big enough for the cable to pass through, now I could easily fit a full piece of housing in there with room to spare. The bike came fully assembled from Competitive Cyclist, there was no plastic tube (can't see how it would have fit as the original hole was so small).

Any particular angle for the picture of the front dreailleur...from above or from the side?

Side probably the best, but top down would also be useful.

Here is what my 2010 FD setup looks like. It is the same as the 2009 R3 that I previously had. Sorry about the crappy picture.

my 2010 S2 was built up by my lbs and everywhere the cables exit the frame like this or the BB they used a piece of clear teflon/ plastic tubing.  This does 2 things, 1- reduce friction and 2- elimnate this sort of problem.  On my old SLC they did not use this method but I had no issue with the cables rubbing on the frame exits.  So it is either a frame defect or the shop made an error.

Did you contact CC, email them the picture and discuss it with them? They built it up

and I would think that usually they would have included a piece of tubing, but I don't know.

Seems like it's not a Cervélo issue, rather a build up issue.

I have the same problem: cable without protection. And now that it is mounted may I add some kind of protection or is it necessary to disassembly the cable?

Re: F. Derailleur cable is sawing my frame!

I eventually put in a piece of derailleur cable housing (the hole was big enough  for it to fit) and sealed the rest of the hole with black silicone. Luckily the frame is black in that area, so everything kinda blends in somewhat, but if my frame was white I would have been really pi$$ed.

Might be possible to slit the plastic tube lengthwise, so you can install it without disassembling the cable. I haven't tried it.

But disassembling the cable isn't that bad anyway.

Re: F. Derailleur cable is sawing my frame!

SoNik, We do typically ship a little black insulator -- we like to call it the 'noodle' in assembly -- however, it is possible that it was missed on your frame. Slipping one on is quite quick and easy. You simply release the cable from the derailleur, remove the crimped end and slide the 'noodle' over the cable. You then are good to re-clamp the cable in the derailleur. Feel free to email or PM me if you need any more help with the process.
