    Upgrade 2014 r3 to 32 / 11 cassette? Optimize for climbing

I want to enhance my r3 for climbing. Can I put a 32/11 cassette on it. I have shimano 105 50/34 on the front. Can I go to 11 speed cassette? Hoping my questions make sense but I want to do more climbing and I think this is the way to get the bike optimized.

Hi I also have done this on my S3 of 2014 with Ultegra Di2. Only thing is that you need to also checnge your rear derailleur. For Ultegra they have two types, short and long. Not sure if this is also done already for the 105. Worst case you need to buy a Ultegra rear derailleur. And yes this is 😊
    With Kind Regards,

You diid not mention but as long as you have all 11 speed drivetrain with medium cage (GS) rear derailleur then I think you should be fine with 32/11 11-speed cassete. GS rear derailleur is designed to accommodate max 32T.

Thanks Noel. Pretty sure I am setup now for ten speed. Sounds like a trip to LaBicyletta in Vancouver is in order today.

All you need (for the cheapest solution)... a Shimano 105 10spd GS RD (~$40) and a 10 sped 11-32T cassette (~$35-50)... both Shimano and Sram make those cassettes and are compatible between brands.  Keep in mind, when you go 11-32T, you do have some jumps (11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 28, 32), and the cassette is ~300g... but considering climbing is the goal, the 28 and 32, paired with a 34 inner ring does provide tremendous help.  I run that 10spd combo with Sram, works very well.  Good luck!

Ah! 10 speed. Same as mine. You can buy your parts from MEC. They have the parts you need:

    a) 105 GS RD - CAD60 (if your current RD is not GS)

    b) Ulterga 11/32 Casstette - CAD86 (they do not have 105 in stock)

If you're not comfortable installing it yourself or MEC doing it for you, you can also just have Velofix sort everything out for you. They can source the parts for you and install right at the comfort of your home or office :)

Man. Trying to find the 10 speed 11/32 is available proving hard unless I order it in. No one has stock. Also seeing some 12/30 available but I want the 11/32. Gaah.

I certainly don't want to dissuade you from a DIY project, but I think you may not need as many teeth as you think. Others have said it on this forum before, but with a compact crank, a 27/28 rear cog provides ample gear range. Obviously all of our fitness levels are different, but I did some serious climbs in the Alps over the summer (Stelvio, Mortirolo, etc). Appx 15 and 20km at avg grade of 7 and 11%. I was running a 36 front 27 rear and found that more than adequate. Jumping all the way to a 34/32 just seems like a lot of spinning. Also, jumping from 28 to 32 seems like a big gap, something else to consider if staying with 10spd.

Or, change your wheel hub into 11 speed if possible ( i purchased a new hub adapter from 10 sp to 11sp for 80€)

Arim, if he's in Vancouver, he may want those extra teeth...lots of hills in Van! I've got my S2 set up with the 52/36 and went 12-29 on the rear (Campy). For the Ride to Conquer Cancer in the Alberta foothills, it's not too bad a choice, but for real mountains (Banff-Jasper or Vancouver), the couple extra teeth with a compact front can be the difference between getting up that last hill home or having to take the walk of shame ;)

    Kronan.

This is all about the hills :-)You hit my though process dead on as I will need those extra teeth.

My cervelo will be my hills bike and I picked up a 2012 barely used Roubaix SL3 Expert for long/endurance rides. Albeit I am looking for a lot of hill riding early to mid summer then a good mix going beyond that. No one stocks the 11/32 cassette. Gonna order it in today. Thanks for all the input gents.

Excited to get this done. Always amazed how thin the seat stays are.
