Help Needed 2013 S2 owners (wheelset question)

Hello I have the blue & Black 2013 S2, but i wanted to upgrade to a HED 5 plus 25mm external width carbon rims. The Specs on the old s2 says only 23mm wheels , do any of you tried a 25mm rims and tires or a 25mm rims w/ 23mm gatorskins on yours ? Any help is gladly appreciated ! Thank you so much in Advance! JT

This one, correct? https://bikerumor-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/S2-3-4-105-600x300.jpg I have a 2015 S3 with 28mm external carbon rims and 25mm Continental GP5000 clinchers (not tubelss) with no issues at all. I previously had 25mm Continental GP Forces on the same wheels, and the rear would rub occasionally on the seat stays. The fork on the S2 is different so I can't comment directly, but I have zero issues on the front. Thanks, -Wes

For reference, here is the rim that I am using. It looks like the HEDs are 21mm internal, which will make a give section width tire wider than my 19.5mm internal rims.

I don't know the actual section widths on Gatorskins, but you might be OK/might not. A 23mm tire seems awfully narrow going onto a 21mm internal width rim.

It really depends on what tires you use. Continental 4000 S 2 has a section width of 25mm on the HED wheels. On my S3 that is what I ran. Continental 25mm tires rubed the chain stay. They measured about 28mm. I can measure them tomorrow. I have a S2 build that I am doing right now with HED's on it. I will post some pictures tomorrow.

A fit test is a great idea, but do note that it's not the external width of the wheel that could be an issue - its the combination of the internal width (21mm in the case of HED Jet 5) and the section width of the particular tire that you plan to run. Higher internal width with cause a tire in a given section width to run wider, and that is what will possibly rub on the chain stay. Just make sure that whatever wheel-tire combo that your LBS is able to provide matches the internal width, and ideally the actual tire make/model that you intend to run.

Here is the S2 I am building right now. This one has HED Jet 4+ in the front and Jet 6+ in the rear with 25mm Continental 5000 with I also run on my S3. They clear fine. The older GP 4000 tires were bigger and the widest I can run with them is 23mm. (that is what is in the pic of my S3)

Thanks! I am not sure how the gator skins fit. Make sure the carbon wheels have a 21mm ID if you are comparing to the HED's Are the roads in your area terrible? I even have 5000's on my tandem. This is France with the Mediterranean Sea in the background. I am kind of a HED guy! Get a hold of me with any questions.

the 23mm hard shell gatorskins complement my commuting and training regimen - although san diego ca roads are worst in terms of debris on the bike lanes . pls let me know if your S2 project rolls out flawlessly with the hed 25mm - ive been looking at other sources since my budget is only $799. my chinese knockoffs (baixiang ( at 4 yrs old ) are beginning to fail and better be safe than sorry in the next few weeks
