  • Re: Please help - alloy (aluminum?) cable cap stuck in carbon cable stop

I was so anxious about doing the 'surgery', it actually kept me up a couple of nights thinking it through. But sooo satisfying when I was finally able to tap it loose without a scratch on the R5 :-D

  • Re: Please help - alloy (aluminum?) cable cap stuck in carbon cable stop

The 'Gumout Freeze Out Super Penetrant' ($14.95 @ Canadian Tire) turned out to be a dud. Promised a lot, delivered nothing. However I'm pleased to report I got the damn thing out, without damaging my baby. After a great deal of thought, I split the ferrule with a sharp, hard blade by gently tapping with a small hammer. From there I ...

  • Re: Please help - alloy (aluminum?) cable cap stuck in carbon cable stop

Thanks. I'm going to try something called Gumout Freeze Out Super Penetrant. It's supposed to rapidly lower the temperature of metal parts. Someone on YouTube tested a similar product and showed rapid cooling down to 0 degrees, which is supposed to fracture the corrosion and loosen the part. I'll report back as soon asap. ...

  • Please help - alloy (aluminum?) cable cap stuck in carbon cable stop

I don't know the technical names of parts, so pls bear with me. First of all, we're dealing with a 2012 R5 VWD frame. I have a cap that fits over the end of my rear brake housing that slots into the cable stop that's incorporated into the frame towards the rear of the top tube. That cap is made of some sort of alloy, or is ...

  • Re: Hex wrench recommendation wanted

Thank you, it's an excellent article. Bondhus seems to be the way to go in terms of specs, quality, and based on additional research, price as well.

  • Hex wrench recommendation wanted

Hi all, I was tired of using ill-fitting hex wrenches and recently bought an expensive set of Wera Hex-Plus. I was disappointed to discover that they too don't seem to fit very well. The Wera tools along with all the others I've used seem to be too loose fitting. That is, there appears to be too much play in the bolt-tool interface. ...

Don't know, but I'd love to participate in that test. Cheers, Lloyd

  • Cervelo fork upgrade

Hi everyone, I've read that Cervelo's new RCA fork has some very nice technical and performance improvements, so I was wondering if a) it could be a replacement upgrade for my R5 VWD fork, and b) would Cervelo make the new RCA fork available for existing, registered owners? It would be nice if someone from Cervelo could respond. ...

  • Re: 11 vs 10 speed - is it worth it?

When I moved from 10 to 11 speed I dumped RED for the new Dura-Ace 9000 (mechanical). I don't notice the extra gear at all, but the ergo dynamic improvement from double-tap to the Shimano system is huge. I wound up hating the SRAM double-tap user experience, and moving back to Dura-Ace was the best upgrade I've made since I bought my ...

  • Re: Cervelo R5 2012 VWD Recall?

No, I haven't heard of a recall, however my 2012 R5 VWD had to be warranted because a crack had developed on the back of the seat tube, about 2 cm below the lowest point of the seatpost. At the time I suspected it was the seatpost (Thomson Elite) that caused the crack, although I had used the same post on my previous (original) R3 with no ...
